Fish Oil Fast Fact #201: The Omega 3 balancing Act
Posted by Michael Byrd on Feb 08 2010 | Tagged as: Fish Oil, Omega 3
Omega 3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that your body cannot function without. They contribute to heart health, your ability to recall important facts and faces, mental well being and can decrease the odds of stroke and juvenile diabetes. As a result of all these health benefits (and many more) many people have started taking omega 3 supplements, usually in the form of fish oil tablets or capsules. This is great for their overall health and can ultimately lead to a better quality of life.
However, most people do not realize that just taking omega 3 supplements is not enough. Omega 3 fatty acids are related to – and interact closely with – another fatty acid called omega 6 fatty acids. The more omega 6s you consume, the more omega 3s you need to balance those omega 6s out. In fact, you should be getting more than twice as many omega 3s as omega 6s in most cases. You can deal with this in several ways.
The easiest way is to limit your omega 6 intake, since most conventional western diets contain “too many” (by dietician’s standards) omega 6s anyway. This will involve increasing your fresh fruit and vegetable intake and cutting down on processed fats, which is good for you anyway. However, you can also consult a dietician on your personal case to get a customized measurement of how many omega 3s you need each day. Just make sure that you do something to make certain that you are getting the most benefit possible from your omega 3 supplement and maintaining a good omega 3-omega 6 balance.
