Here’s a great story out today about the benefits of omega 3 for relieving depression. This was a very small study, only 43 people, but the results were worth noting.
Out of this test group, those with high levels of omega 3 and low levels of the omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil, had more symptoms of depression and had much higher levels of inflammation.
The picture just keeps get clearer and clearer. Omega 3 oils are vital for good health. Are you getting enough?
Lack of omega-3 linked to depression
COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 29 (UPI) — A U.S. study of depressed adults found a relationship between lower omega-3 fatty acids and markers of depression and inflammation.
The analysis in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine found low levels of omega-3 may be an important variable in the formation of depression and stress.
Researchers at Ohio State University in Columbus focused on a group of 43 middle-aged to elderly men and women, nearly half of whom were caregivers of spouses or people with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
Participants who had much more omega-6 — compared to omega-3 fatty acids — reported more symptoms of depression and had much higher levels of inflammation. Inflammation has been linked to heart disease and other diseases.
“This study has shown even in people who did not take supplements, maybe just a little bit more omega-3 could help reduce their markers for both stress and depression,” study co-author Martha Belury, an associate professor at the university, said in a statement.

Q: What is the current recommendation for fish oil intake? I see all these numbers, 220 mg of DHA, 600mg of EPA. Can’t I just focus on something easy like take 1 fish oil tablet a day?
A: You’re right, it’s confusing. EPA (eicosapetaenoic acid), DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) are all types of omega 3 fatty acids. How they interact and convert to other forms complicates things very quickly.
So to make it simple, most major health associations worldwide recommend at least 1 gram per day of the omega-3 fats. Make sure your supplement has both DHA and EPA.
Omega 3 fatty acids may help reduce the risk of heart disease, inflammatory disorders, dementia, depression, hypertension and anxiety. Omega 3’s are being studied for several other conditions also. Omega 3 supplementation seems like a “cure all”; however the changes in the American diet over the past 50-60 years have left most of us severely depleted in the essential omega 3 fatty acids.Sue Kosharek, RD
