Posted by Michael Byrd on Sep 18 2007 | Tagged as: Fish Oil

If you have migraines, omega 3 fish oil can help ease the pain and maybe even lessen the frequency.

More than 25 million people in the U.S. have migraines with 75 percent of these being women. Up to 6 million women are affected by migraines during their menses.

For those who have this condition, you know how painful it can be. Lights and sounds just make your head throb. Many live on over the counter or prescription medicines and lie in bed until it goes away.

There is good news however. By reducing stress, exercising, and taking omega 3 fish oil supplements daily, you can reduce your symptoms or even prevent tem from happening. Studies have shown in Denmark, Sweden, and in the U.S., that omega 3 fish oil can have a significant impact on the frequency and severity of migraines.

This is because omega 3 have natural anti-inflammatory ingredients and also, because of the Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) they contain, it helps women to achieve a good balance in hormones.

Studies in diet in the U.S. have shown that up to 85 percent of women are not getting enough omega 3 fish oil in their diet and almost 20 percent don?t even have it show up in blood tests. Many studies have shown that the supplement is actually more effective than any over-the-counter medicine.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School have found through a study that women who ate omega 3 rich fish such as salmon or sardines for one week lowered their risk of heart disease by up to 40 percent. (Circulation, Vol. 107: 1852-57).

The research team found that in a study done over a 15 year basis with over 5,000 women that the results improved weekly and for those women who ate fish high in omega 3 content 5 times a week, their risk of heart disease was reduced by up to 64 percent with an overall risk of death by 52 percent.

The results were even higher for women with diabetes. The U.S. Institutes of Health states that diabetic women have a three times greater chance of developing heart disease than other women.

For all women, the greatest risk is heart disease and is twice as likely to kill women than any cancer and many other causes of death combined. In fact, in the past 30 years, the risk of death due to heart disease in women has risen to 23 percent.

The American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association say that all people should eat fish rich in omega 3 oil up to two or three times weekly and if unable to consume it, a fish oil supplement that can give up to one gram or more of the necessary DHA and EPA acids.
