If you are struggling to conceive, then you are always looking for answers. Many of the tips and tricks that you hear may seem silly, and you likely have read the same information over and over again. However, researchers in Tehran, Iran have some new and different, “fishy” findings.
A recent study o f 150 Iranian men indicates that a lower ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids tends to equate to higher quality semen, and therefore better fertility rates1. While of course the study is still in the preliminary stages, the initial results suggest that this ratio has a major impact on sperm count.
In most modern diets, omega 6 levels are much higher than omega 3s. This is because omega 6 fatty acids are far more prevalent in popular foods and food components like vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds. Omega 3s, on the other hand, are found almost exclusively in fatty fish like salmon, and you have to eat literally pounds a day to take in the optimum amount of these fatty acids.
Unless you want to spend a lot of your time – and most of your grocery budget – on fish, then the most effective way to lower this ratio in your own diet is to start taking a daily omega 3 supplement. In this way, by popping a pill in the morning and another one at night – just like a vitamin – you can not only contribute to a healthier sperm count, but also boost your heart health and even help your body fight off Alzheimer’s disease and certain types of cancer.
When you are selecting an omega 3 supplement, you should target one that has been molecularly optimized. There are some forms of omega 3 which do nothing but make you belch and feel nauseous. You may have taken non-optimized supplements before and recognize the symptoms! A molecularly optimized supplement has none of these problematic forms of omega 3, but only the beneficial ones.
