Fish Oil Fast Fact #179: Blushing Beauty with Omega 3 Fish Oil

Posted by Michael Byrd on Dec 23 2009 | Tagged as: Fish Oil

When you hear the words “blushing beauty,” salmon is probably not the first word that enters your mind. Maybe it should be, though. Omega 3 fatty acids, which are commonly found in salmon fish oil in high concentrations, are critical to the health and beauty of your skin. In fact, omega 3 fatty acids can take most of the credit for people who age well, since they help the skin retain moisture, improve circulation and keep inflammatory skin conditions (that’s right – pimples, acne, breakouts and rosacea) at bay. While omega 3 can be found in many topical applications, it is more important to your overall health and the health of your skin that you get a hearty daily dose internally each day. The best way to insure that you are getting enough omega 3 fatty acids is to take a simple, dietary supplement in the form of salmon oil, which contains the best and highest concentrations of omega 3. Now, each time you swallow your fish oil supplement, you can give yourself a pat on the back for adding a serious weapon to your anti-aging arsenal without adding a second to your daily beauty routine.

Fish Oil Fast Fact #178: Does Your Dog Need a Daily Dose of Omega 3?

If you are taking a daily dose of omega 3 fish oil to keep your heart healthy, your memory strong and your immune system at the top of its game, then you clearly understand how important a fish oil supplement is to helping your body get adequate amounts of omega 3 each day. But did you ever stop and think about how omega 3 fish oil could help your dog as well? Dogs have many of the same health issues that humans do, including heart problems as they age, visual impairment and even dementia. All of these conditions are issues that have been shown to react positively to omega 3s, essential fatty acids that your body needs to operate, but cannot produce on its own. Dogs not only need omega 3 just like humans do, but they even need the same types of omega 3s – the kind that do not require any synthesis once they enter the body. If you worry about your furry friend’s health and happy aging, then you will definitely be interested in asking your veterinarian about how to make sure that your pet is getting enough omega 3.

What Walnuts and Salmon Oil Have in Common

If you knew that by eating a handful of delicious nuts each day, you could dramatically decrease your odds of developing breast cancer, you would be pounding those delicious bites. Well, it is time to get out the nutcracker, because studies conducted at the Marshall University School of Medicine indicate that not only do walnuts keep you looking young – they keep you from getting sick as well.

Researchers used mice that were already prone to cancer (much like you, if you have a family history of cancer) to test the hypothesis that walnuts could help prevent cancer. These mice were actually guaranteed to develop cancer in their lifetimes to insure that the test would accurately determine the impact of the walnuts rather than leaving the cancer to chance. In the mice who did not receive a daily dose of walnuts, 100 percent of the mice had developed tumors by the age of five months. However, the mice in the group that was eating walnuts developed smaller tumors, fewer tumors and in some cases did not develop them at all.

But what about walnuts makes them so special? The same thing, it turns out, that makes salmon oil supplements so desirable: omega 3 fatty acids. In fact, just to check and make sure, the same researchers simply enhanced the mice’s diets with omega 3 fatty acids rather than walnuts. While it was not quite as effective as consuming the whole nut, it did reduce cancer incidents significantly. Fortunately, there is no reason to let your walnuts and your salmon oil preclude each other. Instead, have a healthy handful of walnuts with your daily supplement, and rest assured that you are taking the right steps to keep yourself healthy.
