Fish Oil Fast Fact #197: Fight Psoriasis and Acne with Omega 3 Fish Oil

Posted by Michael Byrd on Jan 31 2010 | Tagged as: Fish Oil

Psoriasis and acne are both painful and irritating skin conditions that do not currently have a known cure. Since everyone’s body systems work slightly differently, it is easy to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on treatments that might work, but seldom do – even if they have worked for other people that you know. As a result, many people either spend a great deal of money covering up skin problems or they simply avoid public situations that could require them to expose these skin issues.

Omega 3 fish oil may be the answer. Since omega 3’s attack the root of the problem – inflammation – rather than the skin condition itself, in many cases psoriasis and acne problems that were previously untreatable can be resolved with a healthy dose of fish oil. Fish oil is high in the omega 3 fatty acid DHA, and is believed by most of the medical community to contribute to the resolution of a variety of immune-linked disorders like psoriasis and acne, and including diabetes.

Singapore Institutes Fish Oil in Juvenile Prisons

In the United States, fish oil has been used for years now as a natural alternative to prescription medications for attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Now Singapore is taking that treatment and applying it in a new way to help treat young prisoners . Since many disruptive and aggressive children have been found to suffer from ADD and ADHD, Singaporean officials hope that giving a daily dose of the health supplement to young people in juvenile detention facilities may help them improve their daily conduct and focus on getting out of the bad situations that their behavior may have placed them in.

“This study is the first of its kind in Singapore,” said principal investigator Daniel Fung, head of the Singapore Institute of Mental Health’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatry department. Similar studies in Britain and Holland have found that children and teens with coordination disorders and “aggressive young prisoners” experienced improved behavior abilities and focus after the implementation of the health supplement.

This is just one more example of the dramatic effect that omega 3 – or the lack thereof – can have on a child’s behavior. And the benefits do not stop just because you are no longer growing. Omega 3 fish oil has been linked time and again to increased ability to focus, diminished stress and higher job and school productivity. In fact, people who get adequate amounts of omega 3 experience better mental health and significantly lower rates of physical health problems related to the heart and immune system.

Fish Oil Fast Fact #196: Preliminary Studies Indicate that Fish Oil Fights Crohn’s Disease

Posted by Michael Byrd on Jan 29 2010 | Tagged as: Fish Oil

Crohn’s disease is a painful and often embarrassing affliction. It leads to a serious inflammation of the bowels which often become chronic and highly problematic over time. This disease is difficult to talk about, and many people leave it untreated rather than deal with the discussions with doctors and possibly loved ones that would lead to effective treatment. In addition, people with Crohn’s disease often isolate themselves to avoid embarrassing discussions about their condition.

However, there does appear to be some hope for treating the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, even if there is currently no cure. Fish oil, which is high in omega 3 fatty acids, appears to alleviate and even eliminate Crohn’s disease symptoms in many people. In a year-long study, 69 percent of the group who received a fish oil supplement remained symptom-free for an entire year, while only 28 percent of the placebo group managed to avoid problems and symptoms for that period of time.

If you or a loved one is suffering from Crohn’s disease, talk to a doctor about treating the symptoms with a daily omega 3 fish oil supplement.
