When it comes to healthy living, you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to keep in shape and keep your mind and body balanced. While yoga and other types of organized exercise can be fun and rewarding, you can get healthy in just minutes a day by changing some small, basic habits. Here are three healthy lifestyle tips that will have your body performing at optimum levels in no time:

1. Get your heart rate up
While you may want to run a few miles each day, even a short, early-morning walk will work wonders for your mindset and your body. Getting some cardio in first thing in the morning is essential to having a clear mind and productive day.

2. Eat breakfast
No, coffee is NOT enough! You need some sort of sustenance in order to have a clear mind and enough energy to really focus on work. Not hungry? Try some fruit or a light snack like a handful of granola to fuel your jets.

3. Watch your omega 3 intake
The vast majority of people who eat a western diet do not get enough omega 3 fatty acids on a daily basis. This impairs your body’s ability to function, whether you recognize the problem or not. Fend off everything from sore joints to head colds by taking a daily omega 3 fish oil supplement.

Of course, everyone’s body is different. You may need to work with a doctor to address specific health issues that you have. These tips will definitely help you on your way to a happier, healthier lifestyle though. Get more information on healthy living at http://www.omega-3.us.

When it comes saving money, we’re all on board for it, right? After all, in today’s economy anything we can do to “put a little away” is a good thing in my book. But sometimes I find that saving money can really hurt other aspects of my life – and I don’t mean just my vacations! For example, I sacrificed my gym membership to the budget a few months ago, and while I know that I can get a pretty good workout at home, I feel like my entire healthy lifestyle has suffered. Fortunately for me, my husband has always been a home-health junkie and he had some great ideas to help me feel like I was still being pro-active when it came to my health.

For starters, he had me start taking some daily vitamin and dietary supplements. Technically, I probably should have been taking them already – at least the omega 3 fish oil. After all, it’s one of the cheapest ways possible to help your body stay healthy: these essential nutrients are thought to do everything from prevent cancer and fight diabetes to improve your eyesight and maintain heart health. So right there, we’re potentially saving thousands on doctors’ bills!

Next, he also had me start stretching in the morning. It may sound silly to you, but I cannot begin to describe how much better my butt feels after about ten minutes of stretching before I jump in the shower. My muscles used to hurt when I work up and stay sore all day (by the way, omega 3 fish oil helps with sore muscles too), but thanks to my new stretching regimen I feel like I’ve had a mini-spa experience when I get up in the morning.

This stuff probably sounds elementary to you, but it’s really changed my life and I wanted to share. You can learn more about cheap ways to maintain good health at home at http://www.omega-3.us.

According to findings published recently in the British Journal of Nutrition, omega 3 fatty acids are directly associated with arterial flexibility. While this might sound a little confusing at first, what this means is that study subjects with higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids, essential nutrients found in fish oil, in their blood were more likely to have more flexible arteries and, as a result, lower likelihood of heart attack and stroke. These health conditions are directly associated with arterial stiffness. Basically, getting adequate amounts of omega 3 fatty acids is kind of like giving your arteries a daily yoga workout!

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential nutrients, which means that your body needs them to operate but cannot produce them on its own. You must ingest the omega 3s from external sources, such as through food or a dietary supplement. In the study mentioned above, the patients supplemented their diets with an omega 3 fatty acid supplement made from fish oil. Given that in order to get enough omega 3 each day for your body to function optimally you would need to consume about two pounds of salmon a day, most people opt for a simple omega 3 fish oil supplement.

Although nearly a quarter of all women go through menopause without experiencing any negative symptoms or side effects, the horror stories the other 75 percent tell are more than enough to encourage women to try all sorts of methods in hopes of avoiding the experience. Hence, the development of the concept of “eat to defeat menopause,” in which the authors developed a series of healthy recipes full of foods that their research indicates will help ward off “The Change” – or at least its more unpleasant symptoms. And, not surprisingly, some of the essential nutrients taking a front and center role are omega 3 fatty acids.

Omega 3s are important when it comes to menopause symptoms for many reasons. For starters, they are anti-inflammatory agents, which can help ward off headaches and hot flashes. Thanks to their impact on reference memory, they can also aid in limiting distraction and inability to focus – much as they have been shown to do in ADHD children. Perhaps most appealing to many women, some studies indicate that maintaining healthy levels of omega 3 fatty acids in your system during menopause can improve and maintain sex drive.

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential nutrients, which means that your body needs them in order to operate effectively but cannot produce them on its own. Learn more about the health benefits of omega 3 fatty acids at http://www.omega-3.us.

When you read all the great health benefits that come with a daily dose of omega 3 fish oil, you might be tempted to think at first that somehow the guys out there catching the fish have inadvertentlyomega discovered a “miracle cure.” After all, what other health supplement not only promises, but delivers everything from improved eyesight to a hardier cardiovascular system to a better and more positive outlook on life? None as far as I know!

However, one of the things that I have found about fish oil is that in a lot of cases, when you tell people about all the benefits of this health supplement, they tend to tune out. They tell you “It’s too good to be true.” They just cannot believe that anything could really be that good for you. It’s incredibly frustrating because I have so many friends that could really benefit from adding fish oil to their health routine but refuse to do so.

One of the best ways that I have found to deal with this issue is to stop presenting omega 3 fish oil as a miracle cure. While it has a plethora of health benefits, presenting this supplement in light of a person’s specific issues often works wonders. For example, one of my friends suffers from migraines. Because fish oil is an anti-inflammatory, it often can be useful in preventing migraine origination. When I told her just this – and couched in those exact commonsense terms – she immediately went out and got herself some omega 3 fish oil. However, when I’d told her about the health benefits of fish oil previously, she had politely ignored me! It was because the “miracle cure” aspect of all the health benefits at once was simply too difficult to believe.

So next time you are telling a friend about fish oil, go heavy on the common sense. They – and their heart, mind and immune system, to mention just a few – will thank you.

So this month, you are going to get to hear a lot about my little girl. Why? Because she’s smart, brilliant, funny, gorgeous…Okay, okay. She is all that, but she’s also been on a real streak this month when it comes to omega 3 fish oil, and I figure that you might as well get to enjoy it as much as I have. The kid cracks me up!

So a few days after the fish vs. mini-me discussion, she came home from school with an interesting assignment. The class had been learning about eskimos – that’s right; they still exist and they’re still up there living in igloos in some cases – and she was supposed to come up with three things that she could learn from the eskimos. Well, she already had two (how to build an igloo and how to say “snow” using 100 different words), but she was having some trouble coming up with a third. I suggested some fairly easy ones like “how to ice fish” and “how to stop missing summer” but she was not having any of it. Those suggestions were “too easy” and another child or that child’s parent might come up with them. She needed something original.

Well, I thought back to our earlier conversation and decided to take a long shot: “You can learn to prevent heart attacks!” I announced proudly. Eskimos have been the subjects of numerous omega 3 fatty acid research studies because their diets are naturally chock-full of Arctic salmon, which is one of the best sources out there for omega 3 fatty acids. Numerous research studies have shown that eskimos, whose diet is very high in salmon, have a far lower instance of heart attack than most other groups of people. This is credited in large part to the high concentrations of omega 3 fatty acids in their diet.

She loved it. And I was right: no one else thought of it. Yay Mom!

When you think of fish, you may already be thinking of New Year’s resolutions. After all, fish play a large role in nearly every diet, and the majority of New Year’s resolutions have something to do with weight loss or getting in shape. As a result, you may already be planning a strategy based around salmon, but are you getting it in the most effective form possible? Probably not.

In fact, while the American Heart Association does recommend eating salmon twice a week for heart health and many popular diets have you eating it as often as four times a week to keep calories low and taste high, studies show that to get enough salmon oil for your omega 3 dietary needs, you would need to consume nearly two pounds of the fish each day. Now that’s a lot of salmon! Not only would it get expensive, but you would probably start to develop scales after a week of two of that regimen.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to get as much fish oil as you need without becoming part fish yourself. All you need to do is find a good fish oil supplement and remember to take it each morning. And the best part about that? Fish oil is good for the memory as well! So while you are working on your health, you will also be making it easier and easier for yourself to remember to do the things that are good for you. And as your memory improves, studies show that your stress levels will decrease and your mental well being will also jump dramatically. In short, fish oil can have a positive impact on literally every aspect of your health.

When you are thinking about your New Year’s resolution this year, make the fishy part easy on yourself. Resolve to take a daily omega 3 salmon oil supplement. A good salmon oil supplement provides you with an entire day’s worth of omega 3 in a simple capsule that you can take with breakfast, lunch or dinner – no chewing required. Get started with your New Year’s resolution to be healthier in 2010 right now by accessing http://www.omega-3.us.

How could you be a more responsible parent?

Well, there are many ways. Raising them well and providing for all of their needs such as food, shelter, and clothing count. But how would you know that what you are giving them is right for them?

Let’s take food for example. Millions of today’s youth are suffering from many health problems like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, obesity, and serious self esteem issues. Could we be causing the problems without ever knowing it? What could we be doing wrong?

Research proves that these health complications are caused by poor childhood diet and lifestyle. Can you believe that some parents even serve soft drinks to their babies? Now, can you call that responsible parenting?

Here’s more – recent study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that many of today’s babies and toddlers are eating terrible diets such as Big Macs, fries, potato chips, cheese curls, cookies, candies, and other junk foods. Are you doing the same with your kids?

And if this doesn’t horrify you enough, take a look at this. Researchers from Tufts University of Medicine found that one third of the children they surveyed haven’t even eaten a single piece of fruit and vegetable all their lives!

It doesn’t surprise me at all to know that more than 25% of preschoolers are overweight or obese. And the worse part is that the percentage continually grows at an alarming rate! Based on statistics, this condition will be much worse in a matter of years. And it may increase cases of heart diseases and diabetes by 80% and 90%, respectively.

See, what comes out of poor lifestyle and unhealthy diet, and how can we solve that problem? We, as parents, have the chance to do something about it, but it should start within ourselves.

Let us be good role models for our children. Let us develop a healthy and active lifestyle, and then teach our children to do the same. Do this and you can be sure that later on, your children will greatly appreciate all the good habits you instilled in them.

There’s no doubt about it “ we need oxygen in order to live. But do you know that it can also be your worst enemy?

Yes, it’s true. Too much oxygen is bad for you. It can trigger harmful chemical reactions within the body and cause damage at the cellular level. Think about what rust and corrosion can do to your car “ that’s a fine illustration of how harmful too much oxygen can be for your body! And that’s primarily the reason why you need to take in dietary antioxidants.

So, what are antioxidants and how can they help you? Antioxidants are the naturally occurring phytonutrients found in certain colorful fruits and vegetables. They protect human cells from the damage inflicted by free radicals, which can range from inflammation, aging, arterial damage and cancer. Antioxidants also protect you against the common cold, flu, and several drug resistant diseases.

This is the reason why the National Academy of Science, the National Cancer Institute and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, along with the Department of Health and Human Resources, all recommend eating nine servings of colorful fruits and vegetables daily.

To determine what foods contain the most antioxidants, the Human Nutrition Research Center at Tufts University conducted their own research. And guess what they discovered? According to the results of their study, berries, apricots, watermelon, carrots, spinach, broccoli and Brussels sprouts contain the most antioxidants. However, it is interesting to note that some of the most popular fruits and vegetables such as apples, bananas and iceberg lettuce did not even make it to the list.

And here’s more – the most commonly used ingredients in some of the antioxidant supplements in the market are also not on the list! Take a note of that important fact. Alpha lipoic acid, ginkgo biloba, grape seed extract, milk thistle, pine bark (pycnogenol), sea algae, and quercetin did not make it to the list!

Be careful when choosing your supplement. Always look to whole food supplements that are sourced from foods you (and research authorities) recognize. Ask youself, “Will I find these ingredients on a salad bar?” And second, “Has anyone ever died from a deficiency of any of these ingredients?”

If you answered “no” to these questions, then consider looking for better choices. And make sure it belongs to the human food chain, and not some hyped-up mystery ingredients that are not proven to live up to its promises.

A lot of people believe that they are getting the proper nutrition. But how sure are they? And how do you know that you are getting all the nutrients that your body needs?

Okay, first things first. Let’s settle the difference between diet and nutrition. A lot of people get confused between these terms and use them interchangeably, but they are distinctly two different things.

Diet refers to the foods you eat. They can be classified as “good” or “bad” depending on their effects to your overall health. Good foods include nutrient-dense whole foods such as whole grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy, lean meats, fish, and eggs.

On the other hand, bad foods refer to anything that is calorie-dense but nutrient-deficient. These may include packaged and processed foods including processed meat, grains and oils, sweets and pastries, and various snack items, among others. Carbonated and caffeinated drinks such as soda and coffee are also included in this list.

Now that it’s settled, it’s time to define what nutrition really is. Simply put, nutrition is the process whereby the nutrients from the foods you eat are absorbed by the cells in your body. But before these nutrients reach their destination cells, they undergo a lengthy process. Here ‘s how it goes.

1. Diet

Everything starts with your diet. Eating nutritious whole foods greatly increases your chances of getting the proper nutrition your body needs. And remember, garbage in, garbage out. What you put in your body will definitely show in one way or another!

2. Digestion

The foods you eat need to be broken down into the smallest parts possible to make sure they are ready for the next stage. And this starts as you chew your food. There are some easy ways to improve your digestion and believe me, doing so will be good for you.

3. Absorption

After the foods are digested and broken down into simple nutrients (simple sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, etc.), they pass through the intestinal linings and are absorbed into the blood stream. Now, they are ready to be supplied to their destination cells.

4. Circulation

The circulatory system has the primary responsibility of ensuring that the nutrients reach their final destination. If the circulatory system is impaired, such as when you have blood pressure and cholesterol-related problems, your cells may begin to starve.

5. Assimilation

Okay, the nutrients have now reached their target cells. Now, they need to enter the cells for them to be utilized. It doesn’t do any good if the nutrients stay outside your cells, right? So, make sure that your cells are assimilating nutrients properly.

6. Elimination

Now we get to the end of the line, the part where all the waste is eliminated. This stage begins with excretion at the cellular level, and is eventually completed as the waste materials leave the body through the skin, the lungs, the kidneys and the colon.

Hopefully that breaks the entire process down into understandable steps and helps you to see that every stage in this very important process can be improved by eating good, healthy foods.
