I love the sunshine. Unfortunately, I feel like it hates me. After all, if you are pale like me then every time you hit the beach you have to layer up with super-high SPF sunscreen, a hat and a caftan in order to have even a shot at preventing a burn. It’s tough being pale, and I’m always so worried that the next sunburn is going to be the one that gives me skin cancer and finishes me off.

So when I learned that a doctor in Tel Aviv had recently determined that omega 3 fatty acids are kind of like nature’s own built-in SPF, needless to say, I was a little excited. It turns out that in addition to promoting heart health and a sound, detail-oriented memory, omega 3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory agents, which means that they help keep your body from developing immune reactions that lead to inflammation. A great side benefit is that they actually counteract a lot of the negative effects of the sun by healing damaged skin cells and preventing them from getting irritated and becoming cancerous.

Now, this does not mean that you should just hang up your sunscreen and slather on the baby oil. Those days are gone for good. But it does mean that you can give yourself a natural SPF boost by making sure that you are getting enough omega 3 in your diet: something you should be doing anyway!

I just got back from the pharmacy today after shelling out some of my hard-earned “bucks” on a variety of prescription medications designed to keep me healthy, happy and fully functional as an adult. And what did I learn while I was there? Well, these medications could be draining me of vital “life forces” that I need in order to survive – that’s right, prescription drugs have now been linked to nutritional deficiencies.

In a number of studies, researchers have found that subjects taking prescription medications of various types – all under a doctor’s supervision and by recommendation – were not getting the nutrients they needed, even though their diets indicated that their vitamin levels should be just fine! Well, I thought, that’s just great: I’m sunk either way. However, my pharmacist informed me that this is not quite as big a deal as I feel like it is. In fact, I can fully remedy the situation simply by making sure I am getting adequate supplementary intake of various vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients, including omega 3 fatty acids.

Since everyone is different, it’s probably a good idea to talk to a doctor or dietitian before trebling your vitamin intake or doing something similarly drastic. After all, people react to medications differently and you might need more or less than someone else, and a surplus of some types of vitamin is actually pretty bad for your health also. But get in touch with your doctor to find out what, if anything, could be going on with your diet and your medications. It could lead to making you healthier than you have ever been before.

According to the results of a recent study published in Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases, males may derive more benefits from omega 3 fatty acids supplements than females due to the way that EPA and DHA, the active components in omega 3 fatty acid supplements, interact with sex hormones.

As a result, omega 3 fish oil supplements, the optimum formulas of which are already engineered to contain only highly effective forms of omega 3, could get an additional level of gender-based engineering. In the study, women derived more positive results from EPA fatty acids, while men responded better to DHA. However, both forms of omega 3s are important to your health, and this does not mean that you should exclude one for the other.

While more research is needed, it does appear that omega 3 delivery – how omega 3s are “packaged” in their supplements – could use a fine-tuning based on gender as well as molecular form.

While it is certainly no secret that getting adequate amounts of omega 3 fatty acids can help improve the health of your body and your mind, new research indicates that along with heart health and chest pain prevention, a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids could also lead to a lower likelihood of developing age-related hearing loss, decreased chances of developing endometriosis (a condition that causes pain, irregular bleeding and possibly infertility in women) and healthier respiratory systems in toddlers.

The news comes upon a review study of a number of other studies on the benefits of fish oil. Once all the data from multiple studies had been analyzed, the reviewers published their findings on trends and possible but as-yet not extensively studied benefits of getting more omega 3 fatty acids than are conventional in western diet.

It’s one of those things that you probably do not spend too much time thinking about. In fact, if you’re like me, about once a month in the shower you remember to “feel yourself up” and look for lumps, then you go on with your daily life for the next, oh, 25 to 40 days, before recalling that it’s been a while since you checked and you probably ought to do it again. And most doctors say that at least until you’re in your 40’s or 50’s, that’s fine.

But after one of my dear friends discovered a lump in her breast and scared us all to death during her surgery and treatment as we faced the fact we might lose her, I started wondering if there was something else that I could do to help keep myself safe. I did a little research, and here are 3 simple things that you can do to help prevent breast cancer. Of course, these should not take the place of monthly self-exams or any annual checkups that are appropriate for your age and health history.

1.	Maintain a healthy body weight

I know, I know. Easier said than done. But basically, try not to lose or gain more than about 15 pounds on a regular basis. Uneven, drastic weight loss and gain – that’s right, yo-yo dieting – increases your odds of developing breast cancer!

2.	Take a daily vitamin

Getting the right amounts of vitamins C, A, E and D – and all the rest of them for that matter – contributes to your body’s ability to fight off health problems – including rogue cells that might become cancerous.

3.	Get plenty of omega 3

Omega 3 fatty acids, found in salmon oil and other fatty fish, are anti-inflammatory agents that researchers suspect may literally “calm” cells that are prone to reproducing out of control. Most people opt for a daily omega 3 supplement to make sure that they get their omega 3s every day rather than trying to consume enough fish to meet the bill.
Of course, as a woman you should always keep your breast health in mind and follow any and all doctor’s orders. To learn more about omega 3 fatty acids, fish oil and breast health, access www.omega-3.us.

The other day when I went shopping, I noticed that there had to be about 40 items in the grocery store that were billed as “omega 3 foods.” We currently take a daily omega 3 supplement, but those are kind of expensive and I would love it if we could just meet our daily needs by eating the foods that we eat anyway. But I did notice that those foods are more expensive, so I wasn’t sure if it would really make that much difference anyway. So – I’m sure this will surprise you – I decided to do a little research!

First, I went online to try and discover how much omega 3 is actually in those “omega 3 foods.” I was shocked to find that most of the results in the search engines were for advertising scams and companies that had been required to remove or change their labels because they were simply called foods that had any omega 3 in them “omega 3 rich.” So things did not really start out all that well. But I persevered.

I did a little more research on some specific items, like omega 3 eggs. These are eggs laid by chickens that have had a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids. While the eggs can have an increased level of omega 3 fatty acids, there is no real way to be sure of the amount. And furthermore, you cannot be sure that those omega 3 fatty acids are in a form that your body will be able to use, either, since most forms of these molecules cannot actually be processed by your bodies.
What I finally determined was that these omega 3 rich foods may be high in omega 3s, but that I cannot count on omega 3 rich foods to replace the refined omega 3 fatty acids that my family gets from omega 3 rich salmon oil supplements – the best form of omega 3s out there.

One of the things that I find the hardest about getting the “right” amount of omega 3s fatty acids in my diet is that I feel like the information is constantly changing. When I first learned about omega 3 fatty acids, I figured that any old omega 3 supplement would keep me healthy. So I bought one off the shelf and started taking it.

Not too long after that, I learned that most omega 3 supplements don’t really have the right kinds of omega 3 fatty acids, and that fish oil supplements may not even contain the right kinds of fish oil! They could have sardine oil or other types of fish oil that might have some omega 3s but that do not really have enough omega 3s or the right molecular forms. So I did some more research, and I found a great salmon oil supplement that has been certified toxin-free (a big deal since tuna and mackerel often contain traces of heavy metals and other pollutants) and that has been molecularly optimized so that it only contains the best forms of omega 3 fatty acids for my body.

But now, I learn that I might still not be getting the right omega 3 balance! It turns out that even if you take an omega 3 supplement, if you load up too much on omega 6 fatty acids – which, trust me, are a lot more common than omega 3s – then you could still put yourself off balance. In order to keep your balance healthy, you need to try and eliminate some of the processed foods from your diet. Otherwise, even an omega 3 supplement might not keep you as healthy as possible.

One of the things that I hate about many “get in shape” or “change your lifestyle” products and campaigns is that there are always prerequisites. In some cases, it’s that I already need to be able to touch my toes or angle my foot behind my head. Other times, I have to change my entire eating lifestyle, opting for “green smoothies” over cereal or reducing my food intake to radicchio and almonds. Sometimes, it’s even more straightforward: they just plain want my money! Sometimes, I just wish that a healthy lifestyle didn’t have to “fit,” but that I could “stretch” it a little to make it work for me.

That’s one reason that I love omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3s are good for everything: they help you lose weight, prevent cancer, keep your heart healthy, reduce stress, alleviate or eliminate aches and pains in muscles and joints, the list goes on and on…On top of that, taking a daily omega 3 supplement is certainly something that I can “fit” into my life. It’s a once- or twice-daily step that takes about 10 seconds to complete. And once I’ve taken that supplement, I know that I’ve taken a serious step toward an overall healthy lifestyle.

Now, this is not to say that taking a daily omega 3 supplement will solve every health problem you’ve ever had. I’m just saying that it is so nice to know that there is one part of my health routine that does not require me to spend hours contorting myself into strange positions or holding my nose while I force down yucky shakes or chalky bars.

Don’t you love it when you’ve been doing something to help keep yourself healthy, then the scientists turn around and inform you that in fact, they were wrong, and what you’ve been trying to do right either isn’t right or wasn’t as effective as you believed at the time? Me too. I love it! It just makes my day. So you can imagine how “overjoyed” I was to learn that eating a twice-weekly dose of fish is not nearly adequate for my omega 3 needs.

Scientists recently released the results of a study that indicate that it’s not just the omega 3s in your diet that matter; it’s the relationship of omega 3s to omega 6s. Most western diets have many, many more omega 6 fatty acids than omega 3s. And that’s fine. But if there are not enough omega 3s to reach the right balance, you increase your risk – and your kids’ risk – for everything from obesity to cancer and diabetes to ADHD.

Probably the best way to handle this potential problem is to take a daily omega 3 supplement. This will help you make sure that your diet has plenty of omega 3s without requiring you to change your entire diet. Otherwise, you might need to alter your entire food lifestyle to accommodate significantly more fish, just for starters. You may also need to cut out high-fat, processed foods to eliminate some of the omega 6s from your diet. To learn more about omega 3 fatty acids, access www.omega-3.us.

If your child shares your dietary habits – and most do – then your omega 3 imbalance could be leading to an appearance of inherited obesity. A new study published in the Journal of Lipid Research this month indicates that higher levels of omega 6 fatty acid – also an essential nutrient – in the diet, along with lower levels of omega 3 fatty acids lead to a gradual enhancement in body mass.

This occurs in anyone’s body with this imbalance, but over the course of four generations of mice, the mice whose parents and grandparents had the imbalance had a greater propensity to become obese, partly because their bodies were literally built for it with higher levels of extra cells and organs with larger volumes.
Additionally, the mice with generational omega imbalances had an increased risk of type II diabetes.

Most western diets are heavily weighted on the side of omega 6 fatty acids, so unless you want to alter your entire food lifestyle, you may want to start adding a daily omega 3 supplement to your vitamin regimen to even things out. Otherwise, you could end up not only with health problems of your own, but passing those problems on to your children and grandchildren in orders of increasing magnitude.
