Fish Oil: Diabetic Women and the Benefits of Fish Oil
Nearly ten million American women are affected by diabetes. Many are undiagnosed and don’t even know it.
Diabetic women are at great risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), which is the number one killer of women in the U.S. In fact, for women, CHD deaths are more than double all cancer deaths combined and greater than the next sixteen causes put together.
And, for diabetic women, the statistics are not getting any better.
Since the 1970′s, heart disease death rates for non-diabetic women dropped 27%. But, during the same period of time, heart disease death risk for diabetic women increased by 23%.
But there good news!
According to Harvard Medical School researchers, eating a diet rich in fatty fish such as salmon, sardines and herring can help turn those statistics around. (Circulation, Vol. 107: 1852-57)
After studying more than 5,000 women over a 15 year period, the Harvard researchers made an amazing discovery. Women who ate fatty fish such as salmon just once a week had 40% less CHD than those who fish less than once a month. That’s a big difference!
And the results get better with each with each weekly serving of fish. Eating fatty fish five times a week, for example, reduced the risk of CHD 64% and overall death by 52%.
The Harvard research team calculated that women who get at least 250 mg/day of fish oil DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) have a 31% less risk of CHD and 37% risk of death than women with lower intakes of omega 3 fatty acids.
But there’s also bad news for most women – diabetic or not.
American women are just not eating enough fish. Nearly 85% of are deficient in omega 3 fish oil and about 20% are so low no omega 3 fatty acids can be detected in their blood? Only 2% of women in the U.S. have diets that meet their need for fish oil fatty acids.
The healthy thing to do, according to both the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association and every other health authority is to eat fatty fish at least two or three times a week. Or, if you can’t or won’t eat fish, take high quality daily fish oil supplements providing one gram of combined DHA and EPA.
And don’t let concerns about mercury in fish stop you. The experts also believe the benefits of fish oil fatty acids – especially for women with diabetes – far outweigh any threat of toxicity.
