Fish Oil Fast Fact #13: Not Every Fish Oil is the Right Fish Oil
Did you know that eating too much tuna and other fatty, traditionally “healthy†game fish can actually harm you? These fish often are raised in waters that contain heavy metals and other toxins, and the FDA has decided that heavy metals like mercury are admissible in food fish as long as there are only trace amounts of the toxins.
The problem with this policy is that these metals can accumulate in the body over time and become poisonous, particularly if you are eating a lot of this type of fish. Fish oil supplements made from contaminated fish contain these same toxins, and therefore do not help you avoid the potential health hazard.
Make sure that your fish oil supplement is made from toxin-free fish and certified to be clean and clear once the manufacturing process is complete. In this way, you can insure that you get all of the benefits of a high-fish diet without taking any risks with your health or that of your children.
