Fish Oil Fast Fact #170: What to Do if ADD Medicine Makes Your Skin Crawl

Millions of children and adults in the United States deal with some form of attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). While nearly all of these people are capable of functioning perfectly well in their day to day lives, many have been prescribed a variety of treatments and medications to help them focus, study and better enjoy their daily activities. While these medicines are often effective, they can be troubling. Many of them have tempting allocations as recreational drugs, and they often come with frightening warnings about heart trouble, strokes and other side effects. As a result, many people with ADD and ADHD opt not to take these medicines, or not to give them to their children. However, this can lead to problems with focus and stress, two major ADD-related issues. Both of these symptoms can often be resolved with a healthy daily dose of omega 3 fatty acids, essential nutrients found in fish oil. Of course, you should always consult your doctor before beginning a new treatment for ADD or discontinuing an old one, but many successes indicate that it is worthwhile to bring the potential of omega 3s to your doctor’s attention.
