Fish Oil Fast Fact #259: Fish Oil “Mood Boost” Benefits
Posted by Michael Byrd on Jun 04 2010 | Tagged as: Fish Oil, Omega 3
Many seniors take a daily fish oil supplement to help keep their hearts healthy and their minds active. With the correlation between fish oil and the deceleration or even avoidance of Alzheimer’s disease and senile dementia, there are a lot of mental and physical reasons for elderly patients to make sure they get their daily dose of omega 3. However, the fatty acid supplements may also come with another benefit: a “mood boost.”
While senior citizens who are not depressed may not experience an improvement in mood – and may not need one – those who are depressed can benefit from the increased focus and clarity and decreased stress levels and susceptibility that come with a regular, daily dose of fish oil.
Of course, if you are healthy and not depressed to begin with, it might be a little unreasonable to expect fish oil to make you giddy all the time – if it did, it would be a controlled substance! However, the survey was able to capture mood improvements in people with depression, which just adds one more reason for you to make sure that you and your older loved ones are getting an adequate amount of omega 3.
