Fish Oil Fast Fact #260: Fish Oil May Improve Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms
While the results are not yet conclusive, part of a large-scale study on the effects of omega 3 fatty acids – an essential nutrient found in fish oil – indicates that getting a daily dose of omega 3 fatty acids may reduce disability levels of multiple sclerosis patients and could slow disease progression.
This study, which was part of a larger analysis that factored in all areas of omega 3 influence on cognitive function, was actually made up of three smaller studies. One study found that a daily treatment with an omega-3 fatty acid supplement had no discernible effect on relapse rates, but the other two reported significant reductions in disability – this means that the changes were large that there was no chance that they were subjective or influenced by the patients’ or the doctor’s perceptions – and one study reported that the overall progression of the disease had slowed in at least some patients.
While these are not conclusive results, they do indicate that omega 3 clearly has some kind of positive impact on multiple sclerosis patients, at least in some cases.
