Fish Oil Fast Fact #263: Keeping an Eye on the Omega 3:6 Ratio
If you are taking a daily salmon oil supplement, you probably think you have your omega 3 fatty acid needs taken care of. However, depending on what you are eating with that supplement, you may actually be setting yourself up for heart attacks, thrombotic stroke, arrhythmia, arthritis, osteoporosis, inflammation, mood disorders and even cancer. Sound grim? The fact of the matter is that the conventional western diet, with or without omega 3 added in, is recipe for disaster.
In order to get the best effects and the highest level of health out of your omega 3 dietary supplement, you need to take your efforts one step beyond just taking the pill. You need to limit your omega 6 fatty acid intake by watching dairy, red meat and processed foods. This does not mean get rid of all of these facets of your diet. Instead, simply limit them so that your omega 3:omega 6 intake ratio is 1:4 or even lower.
You can still enjoy your favorite foods, but they will taste even better when you know that you are also getting the full benefits of your fish oil supplement.
