Fish Oil Health Benefits: I Actually Practice What I Preach
Do I eat fish? You bet I do. It would be quite hypocritical of me to tell you to eat it while I gobble down burgers and fries all day long.
Have I always eaten it? NO, not on your life! As a child, fish was the last thing I’d eat unless it was a fish sandwich from Micky Ds or fish sticks from the freezer case. And even then I had to have a lot of tartar sauce.
My first memory of fish as a child was being served salmon patties and it left an indelible mark on me. I cut into one and there they were – fish bones. Yikes! It didn’t matter that everyone else chewed them right up.
My second experience wasn’t much better. My uncle talked me into eating sardines. I was quite young and didn’t understand they were fish so you can imagine my surprise when he popped open the can and there they were staring at me with their beady little eyes. I’m sure I gagged.
But time has a way of changing people. I would have never guessed it was possible, but I finally came around. Fish is very much a part of my daily diet.
What finally got me to eat fish was reading about all the wonderful healthy benefits associated with it. Learning to cook it helped too, but the biggest thing was connecting the dots between fish oils and degenerative diseases.
As a PT working in a rehab unit, the majority of my patients suffered from lifestyle diseases that in all honesty could have been prevented with a better diet, including more fish.
OK. I got the picture. Eat more fish and reduce your risk of stroke, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis and more. Suddenly fish never looked so good or tasted so delicious. And so my love affair began about 15 years ago.
And it’s never stopped. Just this week alone I’ve eaten 3 tins of sardines, one can of salmon (bones and all), a can of chunk light tuna, two salmon steaks and a bowl of fish chowder.
I’d never ask you to do something I wouldn’t do myself. It just wouldn’t be right to not eat fish. So eat more fish so I’ve got someone to play with when I’m older
