Fish Oil Health Benefits: Salmon Oil and Pregnancy

Don’t take that bun out of the oven yet! New research indicates yet another reason to eat fish or supplement with a fish oil supplement like Salmon Oil Plus when you’re pregnant.

It’s been old news that omega 3 oils from cold water fish like salmon play an important role in the development of an unborn child. As a matter of fact, its entire central nervous system depends on the long-chain omega 3s like HPA, DPA and DHA. Over 90% of the oils in a newborn’s brain are long-chain omega 3s and the only place baby gets these oils are from mommy’s diet.

Here’s just the short list of what these oils do for your baby. They’re responsible for brain development, cognitive development, speech, hearing and visual development, intelligence, and the ability to sleep through the night (wouldn’t that be great!).

But there’s another reason why you won’t want to be without them. A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests supplementing with long-chain omega 3s may enhance the duration of a pregnancy, which is by far better for the baby because it allows all the vital organs and tissues to develop before the baby is born.

Normal gestation for a baby is 40 weeks and most experts consider a baby to be premature if it’s born before 38 weeks. The big concern for premature babies is that the lungs may not be fully developed and this can lead to respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).

This study indicates that omega 3 oils from fish, or from supplements like Salmon Oil Plus, may help to decrease the incidence of premature births. And by doing so, puts less mommies and babies at risk for complications.
