Fish Oil: Which Fish Oil Is The Best?
Which fish oil is the best? That’s a good question and it deserves a good answer, not just good marketing.
When you ask which fish oil is the best, every company says ours is. What do you expect them to say? We’re second best or third rate. Of course not! But only one product can be the best.
To find which fish oil is the best, you have to look beyond the slick marketing of pretty labels, misleading statements and the endorsements of celebrities and good looking doctors in white coats.
You have to look at the documented science behind the product. That’s the key. Science, for example, will tell you which fish have the highest levels of omega 3 fatty acids, where they can be caught, how to select and process these healthier fish and how much omega 3 fatty acids your body needs to maintain optimum health.
If you focus on the science behind fish oil supplements then you won’t be fooled by the slick marketing of well known brands, with all their doctors, infomercials, testimonials, special offers and implied features, that just don’t hold up to the facts of science.
You also want a product that’s “species specific” because you definitely want to where the oil is coming from. For example, when a label says “fish oil” or “marine lipids,” you’re taking a chance the product is made from whatever comes up in the net (i.e. bottom feeders, scavengers and trash fish unfit for human consumption) or from left over byproducts of the cat food industry. I don’t think that’s what you want to be taking on a daily basis.
Since lower quality fish also require more processing, you want to find a high quality source fish oil supplement that cold presses their oils from only the flesh of the fish and not from the liver or other organs where toxins would accumulate. That way you can be sure the supplement is free of contaminants and hidden vitamin A and D and other unlabeled and unsafe oils.
And finally, to make sure you’re getting the most value for your investment, look for a product that contains all eight members of the omega 3 family and not just ALA, EPA and DHA. These three may be the omega 3 super stars, but SDA, ETA(3), ETA, HPA and DPA omega 3 fatty acids are just as important. And when the whole family is present in a supplement just as they would naturally be in a broiled salmon entree, science confirms that omega 3s are most beneficial.
You’ll be surprised how many well known products endorsed by big name doctors in white lab coats don’t meet the criteria established by sound scientific research. But if you learn what to look for and read the labels, you’ll know which fish oil is the best.
