Omega 3 Fatty Acids May Fight Off AMD
If age-related macular degeneration runs in your family, then it may be time to amp up your fish consumption. In a population study of 1,787 women from 50 to 79 years of age, dietary surveys revealed that “ingestion of omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in high quantities was associated with a twofold higher prevalence of intermediate AMD compared with ingestion in low quantities,” according to Arch Opthalmol’s 2009 publication.
At first, this looks like bad news for omega 3 fatty acids. After all this time we thought they were saving our eyes, but it turns out that they could be contributing to their degeneration?
Not so fast.
The real issue with this study – and many other similar studies – involves the way that the omega 3 fatty acids are consumed. In most diets, people who eat a lot of omega 3 also end up consuming a lot of omega 6 at the same time. In fact, the research revealed that people eating omega 3s via tuna, for example, were nearly always also packing in the omega 6s via mayonnaise (for tuna salad) or similar condiments or food treatments.
This is a serious problem because an unhealthy omega 3 to omega 6 ratio can create a massive number of health problems – including ones that the omega 3 is actually there to prevent. As a result, there has been a lot of bad press recently because people who are theoretically dieting in a way to get the benefits of omega 3 are actually reaping negative results. “A protective association with long-chain omega 3 was observed only in conjunction with low levels of omega 6,” the study authors stated. In simple terms, this means you need more omega 3, but less omega 6 if you want the visual protection afforded by omega 3 consumption.
The best way to achieve a healthy ratio is to consume your omega 3 in a way that does not involve omega 6s at all – preferably through a dietary supplement. Salmon oil is one of the best ways to get high doses of positive omega 3 fatty acids without bringing omega 6 into the mix at all.
