Omega 3 Fish Oil Good For Lung Disease

Ever since fish oil health benefits were first discovered by researchers studying the dietary habits of Greenland Eskimos, scientists believed the high omega 3 fatty acid content of their diet was at least partially responsible for the low incidence of lung disease in the Eskimo population.

Recently Dr. Joel Schwartz of the Harvard Medical School reviewed research on the subject and published his findings in a review of fish oil omega 3 fatty acids and lung disease. (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 71 (suppl): 393s-96s)

Dr. Schwartz’s conclusions were extremely positive. This is logical since fish oil has strong anti-inflamatory properties and can inhibit the formation of inflammatory eicosanoids common in lung disease.

For example, Dr. Schwatz found that that a high intake of fish oil helped slow down the age related decline in lung capacity of both smokers and non-smokers. Slowing down the aging process always sounds good to me. What do you think?

Other studies found fish oil omega 3 fatty acids could significantly help asthma patients. Two Australian studies, for example, showed eating fatty fish reduced children’s asthma and wheezing.

Fish and fish oil supplements were also found in other studies to help reduce the complications of chronic bronchitis and emphysema, particularly for habitual smokers.

The evidence for cystic fibrosis, however, was contradictory and inconclusive. Some studies showed omega 3 fish oil fatty acids helped suppress the inflammation associated with cystic fibrosis, but further clinical trials Dr. Schwartz believed more research was needed to confirm the results.

But all in all, Dr. Schwartz’s review of the research was very encouraging. He concluded there was excellent evidence supporting fish oil’s protective anti-inflammatory abilities against the development of chronic lung diseases. Dr. Schwartz also suggested there was more than enough reason for additional clinical research to further establish fish oil health benefits more conclusively.
